Forget pounding the pavement, research shows one of the most effective ways to kick-start your fitness regime is to hop on a bike.

But you don't have to clad yourself in lycra and invest in an expensive road bike to enjoy the benefits of cycling. Gym-based indoor cycling classes make jumping on a bike easy, and classes are proven to get results.

A recent study by Les Mills International and Loughborough University has found that Les Mills’ cycle class, RPM™, can be a great way to kick-start a fitness regime. With just three RPM classes a week you can lose body fat, reduce your blood pressure and decrease your cholesterol levels. Together this will decrease the risk of heart disease and obesity.

The research also highlighted how cycling will trim the tummy. Individuals who participated in the study lost an average of three centimetres (cm) from their waistline.

Head of Research at Les Mills, Bryce Hastings, says RPM is one of the safest ways to build fitness and push intensity. “All you have to do is jump on a bike and start spinning your legs,” he says. “Our studies show that good music and great instructors encourage people to not only push themselves to get fitter, but to continue coming back to the same class. That’s where solid fitness habits are formed.”

If you want to improve cardio fitness, lose weight and have lots of fun while you're at it, give RPM a go. We’ve just added four classes a week to our timetable so get booked in and check them out!
